As of 2001 India census, Bawani Khera had a population of 17,438. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Bawani Khera has an average literacy rate of 56%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 63% of the males and 37% of females literate. 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.
It is believed that 800 years ago, its name was "ANUPGARH", later changed to "BHVANI KHERA" and now "BAWANI KHERA". A Rajput named Neem after his wife Bhani set up the city, according to popular belief. The name Bhani in course of time transformed to Bhiyani and afterwards to Bhiwani. The name of the city is mentioned in Ain-e-Akbari. It has been an important centre of business since the time of the Mughals. Bhiwani is known for its several temples. Due to the prtesence of these temples, it is also called the little Kashi. Archaeological' 'excavations in the village of Mitathal in Bhiwani have brought to light traces of pre Harappan and Harappan (Indus Valley Civilization) culture in the region. The famed college for textiles the Technological Institute of Textile and Sciences is situated in the Bhiwani district.
It is famous for several casts(approx. 36 casts) existing here. Bawani Khera is located exact in between Bhiwani and Hansi (18 km from Hansi and 18 km from Bhiwani) on the Bhiwani-Hisar Road . There are many Temples, Deras, Gurudwaras, Masjids, temples like "Shiv Mandir", "Parvati Mandir","Pranami Mandir","Kaali Maa Mandir","Maa Durga Mandir","HANUMAN MANDIR IN(dhani"), "Shri Goga Mairi" and recently constructed "SHRI DADI GAURI MANDIR" in side of "Goga Mairi" and "Khatoo Shayam Ji Mandir" in "KUTIYA BABA SOMAARPURI JI MAHARAJ" . There is also a branch of trust "Om Shanti". Some custom functions are organised here every year like "Ramleela", "Jaagran","Satsangs"," Janmastmi". There are FOUR FAMOUS fairs held namely: 1. Basant Punchmi Mela, 2. Googa Navmi Mela, 3. Teej Mela. 4.SHRI DADI GAURI MELA . It is a developing city and have all availabilities like Hospitals (Govt. & Privates), Police Station, Railway Station, Bus Stand and have no problem in transportation of peoples as well as goods. Bawani Khera is now called a Town and slowly and steadily turning in to a city. Peoples here are good and helpful .
