The Battle of Paye was a battle during the Philippine-American War between the United States and the Philippines. It was fought on December 19, 1899, near San Mateo in Morong (now Rizal) between the forces of General Henry Ware Lawton, and 200 Filipino riflemen under General Licerio GerĂ³nimo. Lawton was killed in the battle, and his attack was repelled, making the Battle of Paye the final confrontation between Lawton's company and GerĂ³nimo's. Lawton was the highest-ranking American commander to die in the Philippine conflict.

“Nelsons famous signal before the Battle of Trafalgar was not: England expects that every man will be a hero. It said: England expects that every man will do his duty. In 1805 that was enough. It should still be.”

“The Battle of Waterloo is a work of art with tension and drama with its unceasing change from hope to fear and back again, change which suddenly dissolves into a moment of extreme catastrophe, a model tragedy because the fate of Europe was determined within this individual fate.”
—Stefan Zweig (18811942)
