Battle of Bint Jbeil

The Battle of Bint Jbeil was one of the main battles of the 2006 Lebanon War. Bint Jbeil (Arabic: بنت جبيل‎, Bint Jubayl) is a major town of some 40,000, mainly Shia Muslim, inhabitants in Southern Lebanon. Brig.-Gen. Gal Hirsh announced on July 25 that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had "complete control" of Bint Jbeil. This statement was later discredited. In spite of three sustained attempts by the IDF to conquer the town, it remained in the hands of Hizbullah until the end of the war. The town was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the war, with both sides taking heavy losses. Two senior Israeli officers were killed in the battle. Hizbullah similarly lost several commanders, most notably Khalid Bazzi, the Hizbullah commander of the Bint Jbeil area.

Famous quotes containing the words battle of and/or battle:

Nelson’s famous signal before the Battle of Trafalgar was not: “England expects that every man will be a hero.” It said: “England expects that every man will do his duty.” In 1805 that was enough. It should still be.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
    Bible: Hebrew Ecclesiastes 9:11.
