The Bateson Project (1953 to 1963) was the name given to a ground-breaking collaboration organized by Gregory Bateson beginning in 1953 which was responsible for some of the most important papers and innovations in communication and psychotherapy in the 1950s and early 1960s. Its members were Gregory Bateson, Don Jackson, Jay Haley, John Weakland, and Bill Fry. Perhaps the most famous and influential publication of the Project was "Towards a Theory of Schizophrenia", which introduced the concept of the Double Bind.

Famous quotes containing the words bateson and/or project:
“Traditionally in American society, men have been trained for both competition and teamwork through sports, while women have been reared to merge their welfare with that of the family, with fewer opportunities for either independence or other team identifications, and fewer challenges to direct competition. In effect, women have been circumscribed within that unit where the benefit of one is most easily believed to be the benefit of all.”
—Mary Catherine Bateson (b. 1939)
“I wish to come to know you get to know you all
Let your belief in me and me in you stand tall
Just like a project of which no one tells
Or do ya still think that Im somebody else?”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
