Barellan - History

History

The railway reached Barellan in 1908 and the Post Office opened shortly after on 1 April 1909.

The Commercial Hotel, "a typically large and rather gracious hotel with an impressive upper verandah", was built in 1924.

Barellan was also the first town to have a CWA (Country Women's Association) rest house built. It was built in 1924, the same year as the hotel.

Barellan celebrated 100 years in 2009.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Well, for us, in history where goodness is a rare pearl, he who was good almost takes precedence over he who was great.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

Yet poetry, though the last and finest result, is a natural fruit. As naturally as the oak bears an acorn, and the vine a gourd, man bears a poem, either spoken or done. It is the chief and most memorable success, for history is but a prose narrative of poetic deeds.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Tell me of the height of the mountains of the moon, or of the diameter of space, and I may believe you, but of the secret history of the Almighty, and I shall pronounce thee mad.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
