Barak Valley - Ethnic Demography

Ethnic Demography

Apart from Sylheti (Sylheti: ছিলটী Silôṭi; Bengali: সিলেটী Sileṭī), Barak Valley is also the homeland of Bengalis, Kacharis, Hmar, Manipuris (Both Bishnupriya and Meitei, Rongmei Nagas, and tea garden labourers). Of the three districts, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts have a Muslim majority while Cachar district has 40% Muslim population. The valley has a long history of Islam and Muslim life; half of the valley (Karimganj District & part of Hailakandi District) came under the rule of the Turk-Afghan dynasties of Bengal from the early 14th century and continued with the establishment of the Mughal Empire.

Famous quotes containing the word ethnic:

Caprice, independence and rebellion, which are opposed to the social order, are essential to the good health of an ethnic group. We shall measure the good health of this group by the number of its delinquents. Nothing is more immobilizing than the spirit of deference.
    Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985)
