Later, he went to Moscow to participate in a competition sponsored by the Russian Embassy and beat a Russian Grandmaster. Each year the school hosts up to 200 young chess players from schools around Bangalore. For the past few years the inter-school tournament has not been held. Famous quotes containing the word chess:

It’s a great huge game of chess that’s being played—all over the world—if this is the world at all, you know. Oh, what fun it is! How I wish I was one of them! I wouldn’t mind being a Pawn, if only I might join—though of course I should like to be a Queen, best.
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832–1898)

The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chess-board, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem.... I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists.
    Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968)

Work, as we usually think of it, is energy expended for a further end in view; play is energy expended for its own sake, as with children’s play, or as manifestation of the end or goal of work, as in “playing” chess or the piano. Play in this sense, then, is the fulfillment of work, the exhibition of what the work has been done for.
    Northrop Frye (1912–1991)
