Number and Size
In Britain there are over 10 million back gardens. British planning requires a minimum 20 metres between the rear faces of adjacent dwellings and so there is nowadays always space for a back garden of some sort. In other countries, such as Australia, this does not apply and preference for buildings with a large footprint has tended to squeeze out the space at the rear.

Famous quotes containing the words number and, number and/or size:
“A childs self-image is more like a scrapbook than a single snapshot. As the child matures, the number and variety of images in that scrapbook may be far more important than any individual picture pasted inside it.”
—Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
“I cant quite define my aversion to asking questions of strangers. From snatches of family battles which I have heard drifting up from railway stations and street corners, I gather that there are a great many men who share my dislike for it, as well as an equal number of women who ... believe it to be the solution to most of this worlds problems.”
—Robert Benchley (18891945)
“Delusions that shrink to the size of a womans glove,
Then sicken inclusively outwards:
. . . the incessant recital
Intoned by reality, larded with technical terms,
Each one double-yolked with meaning and meanings rebuttal:
For the skirl of that bulletin unpicks the world like a knot....”
—Philip Larkin (19221986)
