Michael Murphy finally discovers the identity of Methuselah, the mysterious rich man who had set Murphy on all his quests. At the end of the book, Murphy watches Talon drown after a submarine battle. Famous quotes containing the words edge and/or darkness:

    A lonely man is a lonesome thing, a stone, a bone, a stick, a receptacle for Gilbey’s gin, a stooped figure sitting at the edge of a hotel bed, heaving copious sighs like the autumn wind.
    John Cheever (1912–1982)

    Light, seeking light, doth light of light beguile;
    So ere you find where light in darkness lies,
    Your light grows dark by losing of your eyes.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
