B Division (New York City Subway)

The B Division is a division of the New York City Subway, consisting of the lines operated with services designated by letters (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, L, M, N, Q, R and Z), in addition to the Franklin Avenue Shuttle and Rockaway Park Shuttle. These lines and services were operated by the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation and city-owned Independent Subway System before the 1940 city takeover of the BMT. B Division cars are wider, longer, and heavier than those of the A Division, measuring 10 or 9.75 ft (3,048 or 2,972 mm) by 60 or 75 ft (18.29 or 22.86 m).

The two former systems are still sometimes referred to as the IND Division and BMT Division.

Famous quotes containing the words division, york and/or city:

    Slow, slow, fresh fount, keep time with my salt tears;
    Yet slower yet, oh faintly gentle springs:
    List to the heavy part the music bears,
    “Woe weeps out her division when she sings.”
    Droop herbs and flowers;
    Fall grief in showers;
    “Our beauties are not ours”:
    Oh, I could still,
    Like melting snow upon some craggy hill,
    Drop, drop, drop, drop,
    Since nature’s pride is, now, a withered daffodil.
    Ben Jonson (1572–1637)

    New York is full of people ... with a feeling for the tangential adventure, the risky adventure, the interlude that’s not likely to end in any double-ring ceremony.
    Joan Didion (b. 1934)

    I am more and more convinced that, with reference to any public question, it is more important to know what the country thinks of it than what the city thinks. The city does not think much.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
