On the NPR radio show Fresh Air (10/16/2012), rock historian Ed Ward recently reviewed "The Complete Roxy Music", ending his summary of the band's career and work by saying: "...the band called it a day with Avalon, which led off with a lovely single, 'More Than This', but was otherwise devoid of ideas". Fortunately, Ward is in the minority. In 1989, the album was ranked #31 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "The 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s". In 2003, the album was ranked number 307 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Avalon is the highest entry of four Roxy Music albums that made the list (Siren, For Your Pleasure and Country Life being the others). In 2012, Slant Magazine listed the album at #45 on its list of "Best Albums of the 1980's". In the 1982 Pazz & Jop Critics Poll done by the Village Voice, Avalon was voted the 11th best album of 1982.

Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or praise:

It is critical vision alone which can mitigate the unimpeded operation of the automatic.
    Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980)

That’s one thing I like about Hollywood. The writer is there revealed in his ultimate corruption. He asks no praise, because his praise comes to him in the form of a salary check. In Hollywood the average writer is not young, not honest, not brave, and a bit overdressed. But he is darn good company, which book writers as a rule are not. He is better than what he writes. Most book writers are not as good.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)
