History
The present incarnation of the Austin Aztex team was founded by David Markley, who was a minority owner for the previous Austin Aztex. Markley left the ownership group of the previous Aztex when the team's majority owner chose to move the organization to Orlando, Florida at the end of the 2010 D2 Pro League season. That team was renamed Orlando City S.C.
In September 2011, Markley announced plans to create a new Austin Aztex team which would compete in the USL Premier Development League during the 2012 PDL season. At the time, USL Vice President Tim Holt stated that the new Aztex would likely move to the league's professional tier at some point. On November 16, 2011, Austin Aztex announced that former Premier League and Major League Soccer player Paul Dalglish would serve as head coach for the PDL team. Dalglish is also soccer director for Dynamo Juniors, an Austin-area youth development academy affiliated with Major League Soccer team Houston Dynamo. He continued to serve in that capacity during the Aztex' inaugural season.
The Aztex played their first game on May 5, 2012 at Woodforest National Bank Stadium and Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas, home of the Texas Dutch Lions. The Aztex prevailed in the 4-0 decision, denying the home team a shot on goal until the 84th minute of the match. The first-ever Aztex goal was scored by left midfielder Tony Rocha on a free kick in the 6th minute of play.
The Aztex's first home game was played on May 19, 2012 against the El Paso Patriots before a crowd of 2,507. For some of the young Aztex players, this was the largest crowd they had played in front of. The Aztex rose to the occasion with a 6-1 win over the visiting side, which had two players ejected in the first half. Midfielder Kristopher Tyrpak provided three of the Aztex's goals.
The largest Aztex wins were two 7-0 results, one over the Texas Dutch Lions on May 24, 2012 and the other over the West Texas Sockers on July 6, 2012. Both wins took place in Austin at House Park. Kekuta Manneh scored four of the team's goals against the Texas Dutch Lions, and Kris Tyrpak had a hat trick in the game against the Sockers. Austin finished the 2012 regular season with 9 wins, 5 losses, and 2 draws. They won their 1st-round playoff game against Ocala Stampede (Ocala, FL) by a score of 3-2. However, Aztex would lose the next game against the Orlando City U-23's 4-2, ending their playoff run and season.
