An attitude indicator (AI), also known as gyro horizon or artificial horizon or attitude director indicator (ADI), is an instrument used in an aircraft to inform the pilot of the orientation of the aircraft relative to earth. It indicates pitch (fore and aft tilt) and bank or roll (side to side tilt) and is a primary instrument for flight in instrument meteorological conditions. Attitude indicators also have significant application under visual flight rules, though some light aircraft do not have them installed.
Famous quotes containing the word attitude:
“You cannot go into any field or wood, but it will seem as if every stone had been turned, and the bark on every tree ripped up. But, after all, it is much easier to discover than to see when the cover is off. It has been well said that the attitude of inspection is prone. Wisdom does not inspect, but behold.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
