Atami Station - History

History

When work began on the Tōkaidō Main Line, technology for long tunneling was limited, and in 1895 the line was routed from Yugawara north to Gotemba to avoid the Hakone Mountains before reaching Numazu, Shizuoka. This lengthy detour added considerably to the travel time, and work began almost immediately on the Tanna Tunnel to shorten the line. Atami was already known as an hot spring resort and was connected to the railway at Yugawara initially by human-powered trolleys, followed by a steam-driven omnibus. A station was completed at Atami on March 25, 1925. On December 1, 1934 the Tanna Tunnel was finally completed, and through service to Mishima and Numazu begun. The Itō Line began operations at Atami from March 30, 1935. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen began operations at Atami from October 1, 1964.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Classes struggle, some classes triumph, others are eliminated. Such is history; such is the history of civilization for thousands of years.
    Mao Zedong (1893–1976)

Certainly there is not the fight recorded in Concord history, at least, if in the history of America, that will bear a moment’s comparison with this, whether for the numbers engaged in it, or for the patriotism and heroism displayed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under men’s reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)
