Aswan Museum is a museum on Elephantine Island, in the south-eastern side of Aswan, Egypt. It opened to the public in 1912 and features Nubian artefacts saved during the construction of the Aswan Dam. In 1990 a new extension was added displaying findings discovered on Elephantine Island itself, like utensils, weapons, pottery and mummies.
The museum is close to the Ruins of Abu, where excavations are still taking place.
Famous quotes containing the word museum:
“When I go into a museum and see the mummies wrapped in their linen bandages, I see that the lives of men began to need reform as long ago as when they walked the earth. I come out into the streets, and meet men who declare that the time is near at hand for the redemption of the race. But as men lived in Thebes, so do they live in Dunstable today.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
