The Astuvansalmi rock paintings (Finnish: Astuvansalmen kalliomaalaukset) are located in Ristiina, Southern Savonia, Finland at the shores of the lake Yƶvesi, which is a part of the large lake Saimaa. Astuvansalmi is the largest collection of rock paintings found in Scandinavia, comprising about 70 paintings.
The rock paintings were officially found by the Finnish archaeologist Pekka Sarvas in 1968, though locals knew of them before that.

Famous quotes containing the words rock and/or paintings:
“When we were at school we were taught to sing the songs of the Europeans. How many of us were taught the songs of the Wanyamwezi or of the Wahehe? Many of us have learnt to dance the rumba, or the cha cha, to rock and roll and to twist and even to dance the waltz and foxtrot. But how many of us can dance, or have even heard of the gombe sugu, the mangala, nyangumumi, kiduo, or lele mama?”
—Julius K. Nyerere (b. 1922)
“It is not your paintings I like, it is your painting.”
—Albert Camus (19131960)
