Astrogliosis - Causes

Causes

Reactive astrogliosis is a spectrum of changes in astrocytes that occur in response to all forms and severities of central nervous system (CNS) injury and disease. The changes undergone by reactive astrocytes vary with the nature and severity of the insult along a gradated continuum of progressive alterations in molecular expression, progressive cellular hypertrophy, and proliferation and scar formation.

Insults to neurons in the central nervous system caused by infection, trauma, ischemia, stroke, autoimmune responses, or other neurodegenerative diseases could cause reactive astrocytes.
