Diagnosis

Although there is currently not a precise physiologic, immunologic, or histologic test for diagnosing asthma, there is broad consensus that physicians should use spirometry whenever possible to guide the diagnosis and management of asthma. The diagnosis is made based on the pattern of symptoms (airways obstruction and hyperresponsiveness) and the response to therapy (partial or complete reversibility) over time.
