Association of Malayalam Movie Artists - Thilakan Controversy

Thilakan Controversy

A major controversy hit the AMMA in February 2010 with allegations by senior actor Thilakan that a superstar(Mammootty) conspired to deny him work. The controversy thickened with may social figures like Sukumar Azhikode and V. R. Krishna Iyer joining the debate. It mainly started with the issue of not casting Thilakan in a malayalam movie apparently by AMMA on the pretext of "a superstar" due to some issues with Thilakan. The crisis led to the expulsion of Thilakan from the association.

On August 22, 2010, the AMMA again attracted controversy by boycotting the function organized by the Government of Kerala to honor the Tamil actor Kamal Hassan as a part of the Onam celebrations. AMMA said it expects the Kerala Government to honor Malayalam actors rather than actors from other states. Chief Minister of Kerala V.S. Achuthanandan cirticized AMMA for this, saying that Malayalam actors are running behind fame and cheap popularity. Other major associations related to the Malayalam film industry, however, actively attended the function.

Famous quotes containing the word controversy:

Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.
