Conspirators
Major General Abul Manzoor has been pointed as main person behind the assassination. Manjoor was describerd as a very close friend of Zia since 1971 when they fought in Liberation war of Bangladesh together in 1971. Soon after coup of 7 November 1977, Zia asked Manjoor to return to country from his posting at India . They together had closely worked together. However soon tension raised among Mir Shawkat Ali, Manjoor and Ershad of being the most powerful figure. Manjoor wanted to be the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army but Mir Shawkat Ali was senior to Manjoor by 24 to 28 months. Zia finally got annoyed by arrogance of both Manjoor and Mir Shawkat Ali and appointed Ershad as Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army at December 1978. Many says, Manjoor became angry on this action and hence assassinate Zia.
