Ashdown Forest - Settlements

Settlements

Ashdown Forest notably lacks any significant settlements within the boundary defined by its medieval Pale. There are however a number of villages situated on the edge of the forest adjacent to the Pale or close to it. These include Nutley, Fairwarp, Danehill and Maresfield to the south and Forest Row and Hartfield to the north. The town of Crowborough abuts the forest on its eastern side while the town of East Grinstead lies 3 miles (4.8 km) to the north-west.

Famous quotes containing the word settlements:

That those tribes [the Sac and Fox Indians] cannot exist surrounded by our settlements and in continual contact with our citizens is certain. They have neither the intelligence, the industry, the moral habits, nor the desire of improvement which are essential to any favorable change in their condition.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)
