Date and Text
"As You Like It" was first printed in the collected edition of Shakespeare's plays, known as the First Folio, 1623. No copy of it in Quarto exists, for the play is mentioned by the printers of the first Folio among those which 'are not formerly entered to other men'. By means of evidences, external and internal, the date of composition of the play has been approximately fixed at a period between the end of 1598 and the middle of 1600.

Famous quotes containing the words date and/or text:
“We, when we sow the seeds of doubt deeper than the most up-to- date and modish free-thought has ever dreamed of doing, we well know what we are about. Only out of radical skepsis, out of moral chaos, can the Absolute spring, the anointed Terror of which the time has need.”
—Thomas Mann (18751955)
“If ever I should condescend to prose,
Ill write poetical commandments, which
Shall supersede beyond all doubt all those
That went before; in these I shall enrich
My text with many things that no one knows,
And carry precept to the highest pitch:
Ill call the work Longinus oer a Bottle,
Or, Every Poet his own Aristotle.”
—George Gordon Noel Byron (17881824)
