Genetic Controls
The head patterning is controlled by orthodenticle, a homeobox gene which demarcates the segments from the top-middle of the head to the more lateral aspects. The ocelli are in an orthrodenticle-rich area, and the gene is not expressed by the time one gets as lateral as the compound eyes.
The gene dachshund is involved in the development of the compound eye.
Different opsins are used in the ocelli to the compound eyes.

Famous quotes containing the words genetic and/or controls:
“Man is not merely the sum of his masks. Behind the shifting face of personality is a hard nugget of self, a genetic gift.... The self is malleable but elastic, snapping back to its original shape like a rubber band. Mental illness is no myth, as some have claimed. It is a disturbance in our sense of possession of a stable inner self that survives its personae.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“The confusion of emotions with behavior causes no end of unnecessary trouble to both adults and children. Behavior can be commanded; emotions cant. An adult can put controls on a childs behaviorat least part of the timebut how do you put controls on what a child feels? An adult can impose controls on his own behaviorif hes grown upbut how does he order what he feels?”
—Leontine Young (20th century)
