Arrowhead (science Fiction Venue) - US Government Ownership

US Government Ownership

In the 1970s, the US government instantiated the Tocks Island Dam project. This was to be a dam that blocked the flow of the Delaware River, and when completed, would flood a huge area that included where Arrowhead still stood as of 2005. Virginia Kidd was forced to sell the building to the government, but was able to negotiate an agreement whereby she could remain there until the dam was completed and the property actually in danger of flooding. Subsequently, the Tocks Island Dam project was never completed, the US park service obtained jurisdiction over all the properties that had been purchased for the project, and although Virginia died, her literary agency remained there under the risk of eviction, with the park service refusing to provide a new lease.

Famous quotes containing the words government and/or ownership:

The government will support you to the utmost of its ability, which is neither more nor less than it has done and will do for all commanders.
    Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)

They had their fortunes to make, everything to gain and nothing to lose. They were schooled in and anxious for debates; forcible in argument; reckless and brilliant. For them it was but a short and natural step from swaying juries in courtroom battles over the ownership of land to swaying constituents in contests for office. For the lawyer, oratory was the escalator that could lift a political candidate to higher ground.
—Federal Writers’ Project Of The Wor, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)
