Area Codes 442 and 760 - History

History

760 was created March 23, 1997 out of what was then part of 619. Within a decade, however, 760 was strained to the point that a new area code would be necessary to serve the area. It was decided that the 760 Area Code would split such that the portions of San Diego and Imperial Counties currently served by 760 would change to a new 442 Area Code. However, amid an outpouring of protests from affected residents and businesses, the CPUC decided that 442 would be added as an overlay to 760. Starting October 24, 2009, 760 area code users are required to dial 1 plus the area code when dialing local numbers, except cell phone users, which only the area code and seven digit number is needed.

In August 2010, Google began offering phone numbers from Google Voice that use area code 760.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

I believe my ardour for invention springs from his loins. I can’t say that the brassiere will ever take as great a place in history as the steamboat, but I did invent it.
    Caresse Crosby (1892–1970)

Only the history of free peoples is worth our attention; the history of men under a despotism is merely a collection of anecdotes.
    —Sébastien-Roch Nicolas De Chamfort (1741–1794)

In the history of the United States, there is no continuity at all. You can cut through it anywhere and nothing on this side of the cut has anything to do with anything on the other side.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)
