Architecture of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Architecture During Bosnian War

Architecture During Bosnian War

In 1992, the Republika Srpska army besieged Sarajevo (in what would come to be referred to as the infamous Siege of Sarajevo) and shelled both of the twin towers. During the Bosnian War from 1992–1995, over 2000 monasteries, and churches were destroyed by Serb, Croat forces. Among those demolished were the Ferhadija mosque (built in 1578 in Banja Luka and bulldozed in 1993) and the Stari Most in Mostar built in 1566. Today Stari most divides the city into the Eastern part in which Bosniaks reside, and the Western part in which Croats reside.

Famous quotes containing the words architecture and/or war:

Art is a jealous mistress, and, if a man have a genius for painting, poetry, music, architecture or philosophy, he makes a bad husband and an ill provider.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

To this war of every man against every man, this also is consequent; that nothing can be Unjust. The notions of Right and Wrong, Justice and Injustice have there no place. Where there is no common Power, there is no Law; where no Law, no Injustice. Force, and Fraud, are in war the two Cardinal virtues.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)
