Cardinal Scola had succeeded the retiring Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, who had been in office since 2002 and had been a possible conservative papabile.

Famous quotes containing the words present and/or government:

    One touch of nature makes the whole world kin,
    That all, with one consent, praise new-born gauds.
    And give to dust that is a little gilt
    More laud than gilt o’er dusted;
    The present eye praises the present object.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    Plato says that the punishment which the wise suffer who refuse to take part in the government, is, to live under the government of worse men; and the like regret is suggested to all the auditors, as the penalty of abstaining to speak,—that they shall hear worse orators than themselves.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
