Arbuthnot Road - History

History

Most of the roads built and declared at the outset in Colonial Hong Kong in 1841 were quite close to the waterline. The Magistracy was not establlished until 1847 and the land on which it was built was more or less unoccupied. Arbuthnot Road is rather steep and inclined, and runs between Hollywood Road and Caine Road, which was not named until 1859. It is likely that it was not named or created until the 1850s or later; it was named after George Arbuthnot.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)
