Using API Gravity To Calculate Barrels of Crude Oil Per Metric Ton

In the oil industry, quantities of crude oil are often measured in metric tons. One can calculate the approximate number of barrels per metric ton for a given crude oil based on its API gravity:

So, for example, a metric ton of West Texas Intermediate (39.6° API) would contain about 7.6 barrels.

Famous quotes containing the words gravity, calculate, barrels, crude, oil and/or ton:

    Grown beyond nature now, soft food for worms,
    They lift frail heads in gravity and good faith.
    Derek Mahon (b. 1941)

    However others calculate the cost,
    To us the final aggregate is one,
    One with a name, one transferred to the blest;
    And though another stoops and takes the gun,
    We cannot add the second to the first.
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)

    What is the good of a man and he
    Alone and alone, with a speckled shin?
    I would that I drank with my love on my knee,
    Between two barrels at the inn.
    Oro, oro!
    To-morrow night I will break down the door.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    Of course you will pooh-pooh whatever’s fresh and new, and declare
    it’s crude and mean;
    Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836–1911)

    Opinions are to the vast apparatus of social existence what oil is to machines: one does not go up to a turbine and pour machine oil over it; one applies a little to hidden spindles and joints that one has to know.
    Walter Benjamin (1892–1940)

    Hearing your words, and not a word among them
    Tuned to my liking, on a salty day
    When inland woods were pushed by winds, that flung them
    Hissing to leeward like a ton of spray,
    Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892–1950)
