ANZ Championship - Rivalries

Rivalries

  • Canterbury Tactix vs Southern Steel: The two teams from the South Island of New Zealand. In the National Bank Cup, the Canterbury Flames (Canterbury Tactix) and Southern Steel (Southern Sting) played in the grand finals in 2000-2002, 2004.
  • Melbourne Vixens vs New South Wales Swifts: These two teams are the most successful teams in Australia. In the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, the Sydney Swifts (New South Wales Swifts) and Melbourne Phoenix (Melbourne Vixens) were the most successful teams in the league winning nine of the eleven championships (the other two were from the Adelaide Thunderbirds). These two teams even played in four of the last five grand finals. The rivalry came about due to Sydney and Melbourne being the two largest cities in Australia. Also, every year, both teams would play for the "Sargeant McKinnis Cup" where the winner is the team who scored the most goals between the two sides (excluding any finals). Currently, the Swifts are the cup holders defeating the Vixens in both matches in 2010.
