Critical Response

Steven Suskin wrote: The "fascinating extended musical scenes, with extended choral work, ... immediately marked Sondheim as the most distinctive theatre composer of his time. The first act sanity sequence ... and the third act chase ... are unlike anything that came before."

Howard Taubman in his New York Times review wrote that Laurents' "book lacks the fantasy that would make the idea work, and his staging has not improved matters. Famous quotes containing the words critical and/or response:

The male has been persuaded to assume a certain onerous and disagreeable rĂ´le with the promise of rewards—material and psychological. Women may in the first place even have put it into his head. BE A MAN! may have been, metaphorically, what Eve uttered at the critical moment in the Garden of Eden.
    Wyndham Lewis (1882–1957)

Women had to deal with the men’s response when the women wanted more time “out” of the home; men now must deal with the women’s response as men want more time “in.”
    Kyle D. Pruett (20th century)
