Non-colligative Properties
Unlike the widely used automotive antifreeze, ethylene glycol, AFPs do not lower freezing point in proportion to concentration. Rather, they work in a noncolligative manner. This allows them to act as an antifreeze at concentrations 1/300th to 1/500th of those of other dissolved solutes. This minimizes their effect on osmotic pressure. The unusual capabilities of AFPs are attributed to their binding ability at specific ice crystal surfaces.

Famous quotes containing the word properties:
“The reason why men enter into society, is the preservation of their property; and the end why they choose and authorize a legislative, is, that there may be laws made, and rules set, as guards and fences to the properties of all the members of the society: to limit the power, and moderate the dominion, of every part and member of the society.”
—John Locke (16321704)
