Anthony Collins - Essay Concerning The Use of Reason

Essay Concerning The Use of Reason

His first notable work was his Essay concerning the Use of Reason in Propositions the Evidence whereof depends on Human Testimony (1707), in which he rejected the distinction between "above reason" and "contrary to reason", and demanded that revelation should conform to man's natural ideas of God. Like all his works, it was published anonymously, although the identity of the author was never long concealed.

Famous quotes containing the words essay and/or reason:

Essay writing is perhaps ... the easiest for the author and requires little more than what is called a fluency of words and a vivacity of expression to avoid dullness; but without ... a real foundation of matter ... an essay writer is very apt, like Dogberry in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, to think that if he had the tediousness of a king, he would bestow it all upon his readers.
    Sarah Fielding (1710–1768)

Many a man fails to become a thinker for the sole reason that his memory is too good.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
