The Anthony Burgess Center of the University of Angers, France, exists to honor the memory of the 20th-century English novelist Anthony Burgess. It houses a collection of books, manuscripts, scores, and other items belonging to Burgess donated by his second wife Liana, and these can be inspected and studied by visitors and scholars. The Center publishes an Anthony Burgess Newsletter from time to time.
Famous quotes containing the words anthony, burgess and/or center:
“... women of the North, I ask you to rise up with earnest, honest purpose, and go forward in the way of right, fearlessly, as independent human beings, responsible to God alone for the discharge of every duty, for the faithful use of every gift, the good Father has given you. Forget conventionalisms; forget what the world will say, whether you are in your place or out of your place; think your best thoughts, speak your best words, do your best works, looking to your own conscience for approval.”
—Susan B. Anthony (18201906)
“Violence among young people ... is an aspect of their desire to create. They dont know how to use their energy creatively so they do the opposite and destroy.”
—Anthony Burgess (b. 1917)
“Actually being married seemed so crowded with unspoken rules and odd secrets and unfathomable responsibilities that it had no more occurred to her to imagine being married herself than it had to imagine driving a motorcycle or having a job. She had, however, thought about being a bride, which had more to do with being the center of attention and looking inexplicably, temporarily beautiful than it did with sharing a double bed with someone with hairy legs and a drawer full of boxer shorts.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
