Anne M. Burke - Family

Family

She is married to Alderman Edward M. Burke from the 14th Ward of the Chicago City Council and Chairman of the Committee on Finance.

The Burkes have four children, Jennifer, Edward Jr., Emmett and Sarah, and one grandchild, Kelley Anne.

The Burkes are licensed, active foster parents. In February 1996, the Burkes became foster parents to a child, known in public by his court name "Baby T," born to a woman suffering drug addiction. The child's natural mother, Tina Olison, an addict in recovery, sued to regain custody of her child several times in a protracted, highly publicized, and racially charged court battle. The suits ultimately reached the Illinois State Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of custody for the Burkes in 2001.

Anne Burke has two brothers, and one sister, the late Patricia Cleary.

Famous quotes containing the word family:

Classical and romantic: private language of a family quarrel, a dead dispute over the distribution of emphasis between man and nature.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)

In the family sandwich, the older people and the younger ones can recognize one another as the bread. Those in the middle are, for a time, the meat.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

Being in a family is like being in a play. Each birth order position is like a different part in a play, with distinct and separate characteristics for each part. Therefore, if one sibling has already filled a part, such as the good child, other siblings may feel they have to find other parts to play, such as rebellious child, academic child, athletic child, social child, and so on.
    Jane Nelson (20th century)
