Professional Life
After training in architecture at Christ's College at the University of Cambridge, Coburn completed a PhD thesis in July 1987 on Seismic vulnerability and risk reduction strategies for housing in Eastern Turkey. Coburn also worked extensively with Robin Spence, currently President of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering, on analysing earthquake risks and the effects of seismic activity on the built environment.
Since the 1980s, Coburn has studied many natural and man-made catastrophe events, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, and disease pandemics.

Famous quotes containing the words professional and/or life:
“The American character looks always as if it had just had a rather bad haircut, which gives it, in our eyes at any rate, a greater humanity than the European, which even among its beggars has an all too professional air.”
—Mary McCarthy (19121989)
“Our intellect is not the most subtle, the most powerful, the most appropriate, instrument for revealing the truth. It is life that, little by little, example by example, permits us to see that what is most important to our heart, or to our mind, is learned not by reasoning but through other agencies. Then it is that the intellect, observing their superiority, abdicates its control to them upon reasoned grounds and agrees to become their collaborator and lackey.”
—Marcel Proust (18711922)
