Activities and Family

Growing up in Chicago, Ghez first wanted to be a ballerina. The moon landings inspired her to be the first female astronaut and her mother supported her goal. Her only female role model was her high school chemistry teacher. She started out in college by majoring in mathematics but changed to physics.

Ghez is married to Tom LaTourrette who is a geologist and research scientist at the RAND corporation. They have two young sons, Evan born in 2001 and Miles born in 2005. Ghez is a passionate swimmer in the Masters Swim Club which she uses to take a break from science.

Famous quotes containing the words activities and, activities and/or family:

Juggling produces both practical and psychological benefits.... A woman’s involvement in one role can enhance her functioning in another. Being a wife can make it easier to work outside the home. Being a mother can facilitate the activities and foster the skills of the efficient wife or of the effective worker. And employment outside the home can contribute in substantial, practical ways to how one works within the home, as a spouse and as a parent.
    Faye J. Crosby (20th century)

No culture on earth outside of mid-century suburban America has ever deployed one woman per child without simultaneously assigning her such major productive activities as weaving, farming, gathering, temple maintenance, and tent-building. The reason is that full-time, one-on-one child-raising is not good for women or children.
    Barbara Ehrenreich (b. 1941)

A family on the throne is an interesting idea.... It brings down the pride of sovereignty to the level of petty life.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)
