Early Life
Alwi was born in Rappang, South Sulawesi in Indonesia on 19 August 1946. He inherits passion in academical achievements from his father, Prof. Dr. Abdurrahman Shihab, who was a dean at IAIN Alauddin in Makassar, South Sulawesi. He is a younger sibling of Prof. Quraish Shihab, Ph.D and Prof. Dr. Umar Shihab of MUI (The Indonesian Ulema Council).
