Alverno College - Educational Programs

Educational Programs

Alverno offers weekday and weekend undergraduate programs, as well as a coeducational Master of Arts program for teachers and business professionals, the Alverno MBA, and a Master of Science in nursing. The Weekend College was opened in 1977 as the first alternative time-frame program in Milwaukee to serve working women in the Milwaukee area. It is still primarily a women's college. The baccalaureate degree programs, residences, etc. are still open only to women; graduate degree programs are open to both women and men. Men who are not pursuing a degree at Alverno can take courses within both the graduate and undergraduate programs.

Alverno has a student-centered approach to education, relying on lengthy and highly personalized performance assessment systems that provide feedback for students to use as they learn and develop. The school offers ability-based education focusing on eight areas of development: communication, analysis, problem solving, valuing, social interaction, developing a global perspective, effective citizenship, and aesthetic response.

Famous quotes containing the words educational and/or programs:

I am not willing to be drawn further into the toils. I cannot accede to the acceptance of gifts upon terms which take the educational policy of the university out of the hands of the Trustees and Faculty and permit it to be determined by those who give money.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

Government ... thought [it] could transform the country through massive national programs, but often the programs did not work. Too often they only made things worse. In our rush to accomplish great deeds quickly, we trampled on sound principles of restraint and endangered the rights of individuals.
    Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)
