Allie Morrison (born in Marshalltown, Iowa June 29, 1904 – April 18, 1966) was an American wrestler World and Olympic champion. Morrison competed at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, where he received a gold medal in freestyle featherweight. Morrison's two victories over Kustaa Pihlajamaki,of a total of 6 straight at the games, distinguishes him as the only competitor in freestyle wrestling at those games to defeat a defending champion.Morrison was the only American to capture a gold medal in wrestling at the 1928 Olympic Games. Pihlajamaki was one of supreme breed of athlete, a wrestler who achieved 2 olympic golds and 1 silver, over the course of his career:the silver being the result of his loss to Allie Morrison. Olympic champions are the official World Wrestling Champions in an Olympic Games Year, as, by the 1921 agreement IOC- FILA, no other World Championship takes place during such a year. Morrison also captured 3 successive United States AAU, National Wrestling Championships, and had an almost perfect career record with merely 1 contest loss. After these 4 supreme victories, Morrison was forced to retire whilst a reigning triple United States, World & Olympic Champion in 1929 due to broken vertebra. His career came to a glorious end.
Famous quotes containing the word morrison:
“Of course Im a black writer.... Im not just a black writer, but categories like black writer, woman writer and Latin American writer arent marginal anymore. We have to acknowledge that the thing we call literature is more pluralistic now, just as society ought to be. The melting pot never worked. We ought to be able to accept on equal terms everybody from the Hassidim to Walter Lippmann, from the Rastafarians to Ralph Bunche.”
—Toni Morrison (b. 1931)
