Series String Order
According to various editions of the RCA Receiving Tube Manual, the heater string of an AC/DC radio should be arranged in a particular order to minimize hum. Assuming that all functions are performed by separate tubes, the heaters in the string should be arranged as follows:
- Input stage
- Ballast tube or resistor
- Rectifier
- Audio power output amplifier
- RF and IF amplifiers
- Converter
- First AF amplifier
- Detector
- Ground/B-minus line
Not all manufacturers followed this recommendation.

Famous quotes containing the words series, string and/or order:
“Personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald (18961940)
“... looped with the creep of varying light,
Monkey-brown, fish-grey, a string of infected circles
Loitering like bullies, about to coagulate....”
—Philip Larkin (19221986)
“The mastery of ones phonemes may be compared to the violinists mastery of fingering. The violin string lends itself to a continuous gradation of tones, but the musician learns the discrete intervals at which to stop the string in order to play the conventional notes. We sound our phonemes like poor violinists, approximating each time to a fancied norm, and we receive our neighbors renderings indulgently, mentally rectifying the more glaring inaccuracies.”
—W.V. Quine (b. 1908)
