Alien Cargo - Plot

Plot

After months of hyper-sleep, when Christopher 'Chris' McNiel (Jason London) and Theta Kaplan (Missy Crider) of a Mars cargo transport ship the Solar System Shipping Vessel No.17 (Triple S-17) awaken, they find out something has gone terribly wrong. They've woken up from hyper-sleep almost ten months past their scheduled time, find the ship's internals badly damaged, off course and almost no fuel. What's more, it's discovered the first shift killed each other. They calculate that they have only 9 hours of power left and then life support will fail. Since they are too far from any hope of rescue they decide to let the remaining six sleepers die peacefully. Then Chris and Theta begin acting strangely as well after discovering one of the crew tethered outside the ship dead and bring his body back on board. They finds a strange substance on the body and leave it for analysis. Searching the ship they discover a space probe that one of the crew of the first shift brought on board. It scans them, but the two soon forget about it as they try to kill each other in a running struggle throughout the damaged ship. Meanwhile a nearby deep space research ship following a comet debates if they can reach the lost ship in time due to limited fuel and life support factors. Eventually Theta accidentally finds a cure for what turns out to be an unknown biological contamination that induces violent homicidal behavior. But the substance is countered by cold. Theta then has to lure Chris, who is trying to kill the sleepers and her into a trap so she can administer a potent antiviral drug. She succeeds after a close call and Chris is brought back to his senses. They then have to convince the research ship to try a rescue plan to slingshot the crew over. But as they make preparations they discover that the antivirus drug did not work and they are still infected and thus cannot risk contaminating the crew or their rescuers. They then decide to transfer the uninfected sleepers over with minutes to spare before their sleep chambers fail. Chris and Theta then make the hard decision to remain with No.17 and send themselves into the sun to avoid further risk. To wile away the time left they dismantle the probe and discover that it contains a canister of the blue contaminant. But it is also revealed that the probe was originally from earth. It is hypothesized that the probe accidentally picked up the virus in space and then accidentally contaminated an unknown alien race who either as retaliation for a perceived attack, or as mere vengeance, sent the probe back where it came from.

Famous quotes containing the word plot:

“The plot thickens,” he said, as I entered.
    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930)

There saw I how the secret felon wrought,
And treason labouring in the traitor’s thought,
And midwife Time the ripened plot to murder brought.
    Geoffrey Chaucer (1340?–1400)

The plot was most interesting. It belonged to no particular age, people, or country, and was perhaps the more delightful on that account, as nobody’s previous information could afford the remotest glimmering of what would ever come of it.
    Charles Dickens (1812–1870)
