Early Years
QuiƱones, the oldest of six children, was born in a small village outside of Mexicali. In 1987, at the age of 19, QuiƱones-Hinojosa jumped the border fence between Mexico and the United States. Once arriving in America, Quinones could not speak English and worked on farms outside of Fresno, California. As a farm hand, he saved enough money to take English classes.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or years:
“We have good reason to believe that memories of early childhood do not persist in consciousness because of the absence or fragmentary character of language covering this period. Words serve as fixatives for mental images. . . . Even at the end of the second year of life when word tags exist for a number of objects in the childs life, these words are discrete and do not yet bind together the parts of an experience or organize them in a way that can produce a coherent memory.”
—Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)
“In the end we beat them with Levi 501 jeans. Seventy-two years of Communist indoctrination and propaganda was drowned out by a three-ounce Sony Walkman. A huge totalitarian system ... has been brought to its knees because nobody wants to wear Bulgarian shoes.... Now theyre lunch, and were number one on the planet.”
