Alexis Bouvard - Life

Life

Born in Contamines, France, Bouvard's achievements included the discovery of eight comets and the compilation of astronomical tables of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus. While the former two tables were eminently successful, the latter showed substantial discrepancies with subsequent observations. This led Bouvard to hypothesise the existence of an eighth planet responsible for the irregularities in Uranus' orbit. The position of Neptune was subsequently calculated from Bouvard's observations, independently, by John Couch Adams and Urbain Le Verrier after his death.

Bouvard was eventually director of the Paris Observatory after starting their as a student astronomer in 1793 and working under Pierre-Simon Laplace. He died in Paris.

Famous quotes containing the word life:

    Time, fall no more.
    Let that be life time falls no more. The threat
    Of time we in our own courage have forsworn.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

    I do believe that the outward and the inward life correspond; that if any should succeed to live a higher life, others would not know of it; that difference and distance are one. To set about living a true life is to go on a journey to a distant country, gradually to find ourselves surrounded by new scenes and men; and as long as the old are around me, I know that I am not in any true sense living a new or a better life.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    She never dies, but lasteth
    In life of lover’s heart;
    He ever dies that wasteth
    In love his chiefest part.
    Sir Philip Sidney (1554–1586)
