History
The first edition of Alcheringa took place in 1996. Only a few events were organised and most of the participation was local from in and around Guwahati. The word 'Alcheringa' comes from the Australian aboriginal language of the Aruntas. It is roughly translated to mean "the Eternal Dreamtime".

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“The visual is sorely undervalued in modern scholarship. Art history has attained only a fraction of the conceptual sophistication of literary criticism.... Drunk with self-love, criticism has hugely overestimated the centrality of language to western culture. It has failed to see the electrifying sign language of images.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“I cannot be much pleased without an appearance of truth; at least of possibilityI wish the history to be natural though the sentiments are refined; and the characters to be probable, though their behaviour is excelling.”
—Frances Burney (17521840)
“History is more or less bunk. Its tradition. We dont want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinkers damn is the history we make today.”
—Henry Ford (18631947)
