Famous quotes containing the words dire and/or straits:

Speak, then, my Beauty, to this dire putrescence,
To the worm that shall kiss your proud estate,
That I have kept the divine form and the essence
    Of my festered loves inviolate!
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

Yes! in sea of life enisled,
With echoing straits between us thrown,
    Dotting the shoreless watery wild,
    We mortal millions live alone.
    Matthew Arnold (1822–1888)
