Teaching and Research

After a stint at the French Jesuit study house of Chantilly, he was called to Rome in 1963 to be Professor of Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, serving as its Rector for 6 years (1984-1990). He retired in 1998. His research and teaching dealt with the New Testament Letters, in particular the Letter to the Hebrews, on which he is acknowledged as possibly the leading world expert. During his years at the Biblicum he directed 29 theses in his field. For a number of years he was also the Secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, under the then President, Cardinal Ratzinger. After 1998 he remained a Consultor for a number of dicasteries of the Roman Curia until his appointment to the College of Cardinals.

Famous quotes containing the words teaching and/or research:

Whatever I may be, I want to be elsewhere than on paper. My art and my industry have been employed in making myself good for something; my studies, in teaching me to do, not to write. I have put all my efforts into forming my life. That is my trade and my work.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)

If politics is the art of the possible, research is surely the art of the soluble. Both are immensely practical-minded affairs.
    Peter B. Medawar (1915–1987)
