Albemarle High School - Athletics

Athletics

On the school grounds is a stadium with a new track encircling a turf field used for football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse. The cross country course is at Panorama Farms. Sports fields are also available for baseball and tennis. Sports offered include golf, swimming, indoor and outdoor track and field, football, soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball, cross-country, field hockey, wrestling, tennis, lacrosse, and softball.

The school colors are red and blue and the athletic teams are called the Patriots. Albemarle competes in the Commonwealth District, Northwest Region, and Group AAA of the Virginia High School League. Historically, Albemarle has a very strong lacrosse program with the boys team reaching the AAA state championship game 8 years in a row from 1998 through 2005. The volleyball team took states in 2008, the boy soccer won states in 2012, and the track team is also outstanding, claiming the Indoor State title in 2009. The cross country team is currently ranked number 2 in the state, last year they placed third in the AAA state meet, and this year they took first place in the Cup (a 2 mile/leg relay race at Panorama). (Info about the running teams can be found at milestat.com).

The track and field 4X800 team also achieved a junior world record in 2009. This video is of another race in which they set the national junior record at Penn Relays http://www.flotrack.org/video/173892 . The record breaking team consisted of Garrett Bradley, Zach Vrhovac, Luke Noble, and Anthony Kostelac, all seniors at the time except for Anthony, a junior.
