History
The Alaska Marine Highway was founded in 1948 by Haines residents Steve Homer and Ray Gelotte, who used a converted LCT-Mark VI landing craft which they christened the M/V Chilkat Their business was purchased by the territorial government in 1951 and renamed the Alaska Marine Highway System by the state government in 1963. Service was extended to Prince Rupert, British Columbia that year, and to Seattle, Washington (at Pier 48), in 1967. The southern terminus of the AMHS was moved from Seattle to Bellingham, Washington in October 1989, after years of lobbying by Bellingham and the construction of the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.
In September 2005, the Alaska Marine Highway was named an All-American Road by the Federal Highway Administration.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Literary works cannot be taken over like factories, or literary forms of expression like industrial methods. Realist writing, of which history offers many widely varying examples, is likewise conditioned by the question of how, when and for what class it is made use of.”
—Bertolt Brecht (18981956)
“These anyway might think it was important
That human history should not be shortened.”
—Robert Frost (18741963)
“False history gets made all day, any day,
the truth of the new is never on the news
False history gets written every day
...
the lesbian archaeologist watches herself
sifting her own life out from the shards shes piecing,
asking the clay all questions but her own.”
—Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
