Personal Life and Honours
Plater was married to Shirley Johnston (1958–85), with whom he had two sons and a daughter, and later Shirley Rubinstein (from 1986) gaining three stepsons; they had three grandchildren living in Yorkshire, and six in Newcastle, as well as various others scattered around the UK, 16 in all.
Plater was president of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain from September 1991 until April 1995. He received honorary degrees from the University of Hull and Northumbria University in Newcastle. In the New Year's Honours List published 31 December 2004 he was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama.
